Sr. Software Engineer (Numbers) at Bandwidth

Company: Bandwidth
Location: Raleigh, NC
Employment type: full-time
Posted: 2026-09-23

Who We Are:

At Bandwidth, we shape how the world connects. We're the global communications software company and Tier 1 network operator with global reach. The voice, messaging, and emergency services infrastructure behind the brands and apps you use every day.

Because we own the network we build on, the problems you'll solve here are bigger, more complex, and more impactful. And as communications shifts to AI, we're the infrastructure layer making it possible.

We call ourselves BANDmates because building something this big takes collaboration, different perspectives, and the freedom to bring your authentic self to the table.

We're experts who speak like humans. Ready to build what's next? #JoinTheBand

What We Are Looking For:

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer who leads by example — someone who takes deep ownership of what they build, moves fast without cutting corners, and is genuinely excited by the challenge of designing and scaling distributed systems that millions of people depend on.

You are the right candidate if you thrive with mission-focus, enjoy solving complex problems at scale, and are energized — working in an environment where AI is woven into how great engineers work every day. We don't treat AI as a future capability. It's how we build now, and we want teammates who feel the same way.

What You'll Do:

Own your services end-to-end — from design and development to testing, operations, and production monitoring. You build it, you run it.
Create and maintain REST APIs (Java/Spring), customer-facing dashboards (React), and the cloud infrastructure (AWS) that powers the Numbers platform.
Lead solutions from start to finish, collaborating across teams to iteratively ship value aligned to customer and business needs.
Identify and solve scaling problems through both application development and infrastructure optimization, ensuring high availability and fault tolerance.
Mentor junior and mid-level developers through productive code reviews, thoughtful design discussions, and by modeling the engineering standards you want to see on the team.
Partner with product owners and stakeholders to translate requirements into well-designed, maintainable solutions — contributing to feature sizing and technical roadmap discussions.
Use AI as a core engineering tool — not occasionally, but daily. You reach for AI assistants in code generation, design exploration, debugging, and documentation, and you do it with the confidence of someone who knows the fundamentals well enough to lead the AI, not just follow it.
Drive continuous improvement — look critically at what we're building and how we're building it, and originate ideas that advance both our craft and our platform's reliability.

What You Need:

You are the right candidate if…

You have 5+ years of experience building web services in a modern programming language (Java strongly preferred; C# or Go also welcome)
You have built and deployed applications for the cloud, preferably AWS
You have a solid understanding of network protocols, HTTP, and REST API design
You have experience designing and working with distributed systems
You have experience with relational and non-relational database systems
You have experience with scale, performance optimization, and building for fault tolerance
You have experience with test automation patterns and frameworks
You bring a continuous learning mindset — the tooling, the patterns, and the pace of change don't unsettle you, they excite you. You adapt quickly, absorb new concepts eagerly, and bring others along with you.
You are genuinely enthusiastic about AI — you follow the space, you experiment, and you have a point of view on where engineering is heading
Actively use AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, or similar) in all parts of the software development lifecycle
You hold a 4-year technical degree or equivalent experience

Bonus Points:

It would be really great if you also…

Have hands-on experience with AWS (ECS, EKS, API Gateway, S3, SQS, Lambda, Aurora)
Have some experience with front-end development, preferably React
Have experience with messaging brokers (Kafka, ActiveMQ)
Have experience working with Agentic coding frameworks like Strands in a professional context
Bring a genuine enthusiasm for AI — you follow the field, you form opinions, and you help teammates level up their own AI fluency
