Corporate Systems Engineering builds and operates the software platforms, integrations, and automations that power Smartsheet’s core business functions across Finance, Sales/GTM, and People & Culture. Our team owns mission-critical systems and workflows that enable how the company hires, sells, bills, pays, reports, and scales. We operate at the intersection of software engineering, enterprise platforms, and business-critical data, treating internal systems with the same rigor, reliability, and product mindset as customer-facing software.

Financial Systems Engineering owns and evolves the technology ecosystem that powers Smartsheet’s financial operations and monetization capabilities. The team is responsible for platforms including NetSuite, Coupa, Planful, Stripe, ZoneBilling, Metronome, and supporting technologies such as Avalara, along with the integrations, data, automation, and engineering capabilities that connect these platforms across the enterprise.

As Director, Finance Systems & ERP, you will lead the engineering organization responsible for Smartsheet’s financial technology ecosystem and define the long-term technical strategy for how these platforms evolve. You will own the architecture, engineering maturity, technical health, and delivery of systems supporting core financial operations, procurement, planning, payments, billing, revenue processes, and emerging monetization models.

This is a strategic and highly visible technology leadership role. You will lead major transformation initiatives including ERP modernization, billing transformation, and the evolution toward usage-based and consumption-based monetization. You will represent Corporate Systems in executive steering committees and major transformation programs, partnering closely with Finance, Accounting, Procurement, Product Engineering, Sales/GTM, Data, and other technology leaders.

You will partner closely with Product Managers across Financial Systems and Billing & Monetization to combine business and product strategy with a forward-looking technical strategy. You will be expected to challenge legacy architectures and operating models, identify opportunities to simplify and automate financial processes, and determine how modern software engineering, enterprise data, automation, and AI can improve how Finance technology operates.

You will report to the Senior Director of Corporate Systems and collaborate closely with Product and Engineering leaders across the organization.

You Will:

Own the technical strategy and long-term architecture for Smartsheet’s financial systems ecosystem across ERP, procurement, financial planning, payments, billing, tax, revenue processes, integrations, data, automation, and AI
Lead, coach, and develop the Financial Systems Engineering organization responsible for platforms including NetSuite, Coupa, Planful, Stripe, ZoneBilling, Metronome, Avalara, and associated technologies
Serve as the senior technology leader for NetSuite and ERP, ensuring the platform and surrounding architecture remain scalable, maintainable, secure, auditable, and aligned with the long-term needs of a complex SaaS business
Provide technology leadership for major Finance transformation programs, including ERP reimplementation and modernization, establishing architecture, engineering standards, technical governance, delivery practices, and long-term platform direction
Partner with Product Managers for Financial Systems and Billing & Monetization to translate product strategy and business priorities into technical roadmaps, architecture, investment decisions, and executable engineering plans
Shape the technology architecture required to support evolving SaaS monetization models, including subscription, multi-year, usage-based, consumption-based, and AI-related pricing and billing models
Partner across Product Engineering, Sales/GTM, Finance, and Corporate Systems to ensure pricing and packaging strategies can be represented reliably from quote and entitlement through provisioning, usage, billing, accounting, and revenue processes
Establish clear architectural boundaries and systems of record across CRM, product, billing, ERP, payments, tax, planning, and downstream data platforms, reducing ambiguity, duplication, and unnecessary coupling
Define the strategy for Finance systems data, including authoritative sources, data models, data contracts, quality, lineage, reconciliation, historical integrity, and reliable consumption by the enterprise data platform
Partner closely with Data Engineering and Analytics teams to integrate Financial Systems with the enterprise data lake and ensure Finance data is timely, trustworthy, well-defined, and usable for financial reporting, operational analytics, reconciliation, and AI
Drive stronger data quality and observability across Quote-to-Cash and Finance workflows, moving the organization from reactive reconciliation toward proactive detection and prevention of data integrity issues
Establish an AI strategy for Financial Systems Engineering, identifying practical opportunities to improve engineering productivity, financial operations, controls, testing, support, reconciliation, and employee experiences
Evaluate and introduce AI-assisted and agentic capabilities where appropriate, while ensuring financial integrity, security, auditability, human oversight, and appropriate controls for higher-risk processes
Develop a strategy for automated testing and quality engineering across the Finance technology stack, including regression testing, integration testing, data validation, reconciliation, and AI-assisted test generation and analysis
Establish modern engineering practices across enterprise platforms, including source control, peer review, CI/CD, environment management, automated testing, observability, documentation, release engineering, and operational readiness where supported by the underlying technologies
Determine appropriate boundaries between native SaaS configuration, platform extensibility, APIs, integrations, automation, and custom software, avoiding unnecessary customization while enabling capabilities the business requires
Partner with Integration Engineering to ensure critical Finance and Quote-to-Cash integrations use scalable patterns, explicit contracts, appropriate observability, resilient error handling, and well-defined operational ownership
Own the technical health and lifecycle of the Financial Systems portfolio, proactively addressing architectural debt, platform limitations, fragile integrations, unnecessary customization, manual processes, and recurring operational problems
Establish architecture reviews, technical standards, engineering metrics, platform health reviews, and other mechanisms that continuously improve the maturity of Financial Systems Engineering
Represent Financial Systems Engineering on executive steering committees, transformation governance forums, and major program reviews, clearly communicating architecture decisions, delivery status, risks, dependencies, investment needs, and tradeoffs
Provide technical leadership across implementation partners and strategic vendors, ensuring system integrators and software providers operate within Smartsheet’s architecture, engineering, security, and delivery expectations rather than allowing vendors to define the long-term architecture
Partner with Finance leadership, Accounting, FP&A, Procurement, Tax, Revenue, and other stakeholders to understand business strategy while maintaining clear technology ownership of architecture and engineering decisions
Balance delivery of major transformation programs with operational reliability, roadmap commitments, technical debt reduction, platform modernization, security, controls, and long-term engineering investments
Build strong partnerships across Finance, Product Engineering, Sales/GTM, Data, Security, AI & Automation, and Corporate Systems to ensure Financial Systems operate as part of a coherent enterprise architecture
Recruit, develop, and retain engineering talent with a combination of Finance platform expertise, software engineering capability, systems thinking, and curiosity about the future of financial technology

You Have:

10+ years of progressively responsible experience across financial systems, enterprise application engineering, ERP, software engineering, systems architecture, or related technical disciplines
5+ years of experience leading technical teams, including experience managing managers, senior engineers, architects, or other technical leaders
Deep experience with NetSuite or comparable enterprise ERP platforms, with sufficient technical depth to lead architecture, challenge implementation decisions, and establish long-term platform strategy
Demonstrated experience leading a major ERP implementation, reimplementation, or transformation program from architecture and design through implementation, stabilization, and ongoing evolution
Strong understanding of financial business processes including record-to-report, procure-to-pay, order-to-cash, billing, payments, financial planning, accounting, and revenue-related workflows
Experience with financial platforms such as Coupa, Planful, Stripe, ZoneBilling, Metronome, Avalara, or comparable ERP, procurement, planning, payments, billing, tax, or monetization technologies
Experience with SaaS billing and monetization architectures, including subscription and usage-based or consumption-based business models
Strong systems thinking and the ability to reason across ERP, CRM, product, billing, payments, integrations, data platforms, APIs, automation, and financial controls as a connected architecture
Demonstrated experience defining technical strategy and architecture, rather than solely managing enterprise application delivery, configuration, implementation partners, or support
Experience designing or evolving enterprise data architecture, including systems of record, data models, interfaces, contracts, quality, reconciliation, governance, lineage, and downstream consumption
Experience partnering with enterprise Data Engineering or Analytics organizations and integrating operational systems with platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake, or similar enterprise data technologies
Experience establishing modern engineering practices within enterprise application environments, including automated testing, CI/CD, source control, observability, release management, documentation, and operational readiness
Understanding of modern AI capabilities and the ability to identify practical applications of LLMs, agents, and intelligent automation while appropriately managing financial, security, and compliance risk
Strong understanding of financial controls, auditability, security, data integrity, and compliance considerations associated with business-critical financial platforms
Experience governing system integrators and technology vendors during large transformation programs, including the ability to challenge proposed architectures and hold partners accountable for engineering quality
Experience partnering with Product Managers and senior business leaders to combine business strategy, product strategy, and technical strategy into coherent roadmaps and investment decisions
Ability to operate comfortably from executive steering committee discussions to detailed architecture reviews, translating effectively between business executives, Finance leaders, Product Managers, engineers, architects, and implementation partners
Demonstrated ability to challenge legacy processes and architectures constructively and lead organizations through significant technology and operating-model change
Excellent analytical, verbal, and written communication skills, with demonstrated executive presence and the ability to communicate complex technology decisions, risks, and tradeoffs clearly
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Finance, Business, or a related field - or equivalent practical experience

Smartsheet provides a competitive base salary range for roles that may be hired in different geographic areas we are licensed to operate our business from. Actual compensation is determined by several factors including, but not limited to, level of professional, educational experience, skills, and specific candidate location. In addition, this role will be eligible for a market competitive incentive opportunity.

US Base Salary Pay Range $175,000 — $230,000 USD
